Carstens 1507-27, typical base mark
Ceramics collecting is funny. Sometimes you come upon a form, or pattern, or glaze which just strikes a chord… and you wake up one day with 12 of something, like my assortment of Carstens 1507-27 here. I’m not sure what the designer was going for — mixing an industrial smokestack of a neck, swelling bottom resembling a UFO, and oh-so-delicate handle — but it all comes together to create a unique and instantly identifiable form. It must have sold well for Carstens, as they used it as a backdrop for seemingly every decor they produced in the 60s and 70s. As a result, there is no shortage of these today… something which delights my heart, but dismays my wallet.
