Dümler & Breiden 440-10, 446-20

At first glance, these two Dümler & Breiden vases — with their modest shapes, scalloped edges and seemingly sedate glazes — are not what one usually associates with D&B pieces, which many times are so shocking in shape and color as to make one’s spouse run from the room. No, these two represent the civilized part of D&B’s universe; the Swiss citizens, if you will, with nary a wrinkle to be found on a blouse. But is it true? Closer inspection shows a marvelous, copper-infused glaze on the smaller one, while the large one has an almost magical, how-did-they-do-it pattern which reads as metallic along the top edge. They even feel wonderful, with shapes that caress you back when you hold them. Swiss citizens, yes… but wearing La Perla.
