Double Vision

Bay Keramik 82-20 (both)

Bay Keramik produced an amazing run of fun, colorfully glazed pieces during its lifetime, but this 82-20 doppelvase takes the cake! With its idiosyncratic mix of swirls, flowers and symbols, superfluous handle, and twin necks, it would seem to be lifted right from the mind of Dr. Seuss. Did the designer mean for this to be carried somewhere? Was there a demand for a vase which would hold two blooms separately? Whatever the case, it illustrates the inherent freedom under which mid-century ceramics producers operated, something which — in today’s overly corporate, sanitized world — we may never see again.
