This little friend was sitting unloved on the internet, with no one willing to adopt him. I imagine all the other vases with him had been looked at, oohed and aahed over, and then given good homes… but with his slightly frumpy shape, odd colors and lack of pedigree (no molded base markings), he was never destined to be the pick of the litter. But sometimes it takes just the right person to come along and fall in love, and so it was when we met. But what a surprise there was for me when he arrived! The bottom contained a handwritten “Grundgl.” and “Dekorgl.” — German shorthand for base glaze (glasur) and final glaze. In combination with the numbers, this identified the vase as a one-of-a-kind test piece. Pedigree, indeed! I wouldn’t trade him in for all the world.
