Dishy

Unknown German manufacturer, prob. 70s, 15.5cm long

I was in the middle of re-boxing some vases when this fun burst of color caught my eye, and I just couldn’t wrap it up without taking some pictures. I’m not normally a dish collector, but when I saw this on German Ebay a long time ago I knew it was for me. I was in for a surprise upon delivery, however! While the deep red, mottled-black glaze and gently curving and off-center rim made it interesting, it was the center of the dish which really took my breath away. A white spot touched with black, surrounded by a sea foam green, then black, and finally a ring of shimmering, crackling blue… wow. For what was probably a coin or key holder! I dare you to find any common object destined for ordinary retail made with such artistry today. For those who like to live life in the presence of unique objects, while also doing one’s part to sustain the environment, you can’t do any better then buying mid-century ceramics for everyday use. It’s good for a clean conscience and a reminder that once upon a time everything didn’t have “China” stamped on the bottom.
